Prosoft Engineering is primarily known for their Data Recovery Software that helps users recover deleted and lost files. While Data Rescue is their most well-known software, Prosoft Engineering offers software that can help with many different hard drive or storage device related issues. They provide other software including Drive Genius, which offers many hard drive maintenance tools, as well as Antivirus For Mac and Data Backup for facilitating safe data storage and protection by keeping multiple copies of important files in different locations. With their software, Prosoft Engineering can assist with nearly any data storage or Mac-related issue, placing them at the forefront of the Data Recovery and Mac software industries.
Data Rescue
Data Rescue for Mac offers many features that are beneficial to regular computer users as well as tech professionals. The recovery capabilities include files that have been lost due to: deletion, reformatting of a hard drive, a storage device that fails to mount or boot, drives with damaged partition maps, and more.
Data Rescue offers multiple scan types that can be useful depending on your situation:
- A Quick Scan will produce the Found Files folder, which displays any files from any detected file systems, and it will list the original directory structures and file names if possible. This will be beneficial if you are recovering from a hard drive that fails to boot, or if an external hard drive is failing to mount.
- A Deleted Files Scan will produce the Reconstructed Files folder, which will organize any found files by file type and category, but the files will most likely no longer have their original file name, as this type of scan attempts to find files based on file patterns. This type of scan is useful if your device was reformatted or the files were deleted.
If you are unsure which scan will be best in your situation, you can combine both options by performing a Deep Scan to retrieve the results of both the Quick and Deleted Files scan.
Data Rescue also has tools that can be useful if your hard drive is showing signs of failure. If the software detects slow reads or read errors when trying to access the data on your device, Data Rescue will produce a drive failure warning. You can use Data Rescue's Clone feature to attempt a failing drive to another device of the same size or larger, and the clone can then be scanned for recovery. If the drive shows many read errors in succession it can indicate a more severe issue, and in those situations the software will recommend physical data recovery services to have the drive evaluated in a cleanroom lab.
Drive Genius
Drive Genius can prevent the need for cloning a failed drive and data recovery, as described above, through it's hard drive monitoring utility DrivePulse. When enabled, DrivePulse will fully automate drive integrity testing when the computer is not in use. This will monitor drives for physical and consistency problems, fragmentation, corrupted preference files, low free space, and in the latest version, malware infections with Antivirus For Mac. DrivePulse can warn you of drive failure before it occurs, allowing you to backup important files and replace the damaged device before a recovery software is needed.
In addition to the automatic maintenance features offered with DrivePulse, all of the Drive Genius utilities can be run manually through the software's main interface. This includes: Defrag, Find Large Files and Duplicates, Clone, Secure Erase, Repartition, Malware Scan, Physical Check, Consistency Check, Repair, Rebuild, and more. With all of these tools available at your disposal, it is easy to maintain the health of your hard drives and keep your computer performing at its best.
Data Backup
One of the best features using a Mac Backup Software besides Time Machine is the customizability of backup sets. Using Prosoft Engineering's Data Backup software, you have full control over the devices and files being backed up. In addition to the built-in quick backup sets that make it easy to backup your Mac, you can create different custom backup types from the following:
Simple Copy - Copies the source drive or folder to the destination drive or folder. Subsequent backups will only copy changed files in the backup, and any files removed from your source location will also be removed from the destination.
Clone - Make an exact copy of the source to the destination, and if the source device is bootable, the resulting backup destination will also be bootable. This option is great for moving to a new device such as upgrading to an SSD, or to keep a swappable copy of your internal Mac drive in the case of device failure.
Versioned - Similar to simple copy, this will backup the source to the destination, but on subsequent backups it will archive the previous versions of the files in a hidden area on your destination. You can control the number of versions that are saved for versioned backups, and can restore files from previous versions through the Data Backup Destinations interface.
Synchronize - This backup type merges the contents of the two selected devices or folders, and will place the complete set of data on both the source and destination locations. This is useful if you have two computers you want to share work on, such as a folder shared between a home and work computer.
Data Backup is a powerful tool to prevent against data loss that would normally lead to needing software such as Data Rescue. By keeping an up to date backup of your important files and folders, the data can simply be restored from the destination in the event of device failure or accidental data loss through deletion or reformatting.
Final Thoughts
While Data Rescue is their most popular software, Prosoft Engineering offers other utilities that can prevent and safeguard from data loss before it happens. Through DrivePulse, Drive Genius can warn you of device failure before it occurs, allowing you time to backup important data. A more preemptive approach can also be taken by using Data Backup to maintain an up to date copy of all your important devices and files. And of course, in the event of data loss, Data Rescue can be used to recover files due to deletion, reformatting, corruption, and a number of other situations. With these softwares at your disposal, you will be ready to handle nearly any situation on your Mac.
